The Great Race

The Great Race in Auburn, New York, also known as the Captain Myles Keogh Paddle, Wheel, & Run, will mark its 32nd year in 2009. Five distinct Run, Bike, and Paddle (either canoe or kayak) Team Triathlon Relay races will begin at 9:30 A.M. on the second Sunday of August at Emerson Park, on Owasco Lake in New York's Finger Lakes regionThe feature event, also known as the Traditional Canoe Race, is a relay of 4 person teams. It begins with a 10k run on county roads and the streets of Auburn. After finishing, runners hand off to their cycling teammate who then completes a course of about 19 challenging miles on country (all paved) roads. The cyclist then hands off to one canoe teammate who runs to the beach at Auburn's Emerson Park (about 400 yards) where his canoe and canoe partner await. The canoers then complete an out and back 4 mile sprint course on Owasco Lake to try to earn the coveted title of Great Race Champion
